Condition: The dust jacket has light to medium fading in places, light surface rubbing, and a few small light indentations. The bottom edge of the cover has light shelf wear around the spine area, and there is compressing to the spine. There is light age spotting to the inside of the front and back cover and to the first and last 2 pages. The rest of the book has no faults. The pages are clean and bright.

Letters by Frances Hodgkins Edited by Linda Gill

From beginnings in gossipy colonial Dunedin, through her ecstatic discovery of Europe and North Africa, the years when her ambition warred with the duty of an unmarried daughter to care for her widowed mother, the long frustrating unrecognised years when she was coming to terms with modernism, to the final flowering in her sixties and seventies, every change of fortune and mood was poured out to family and friends. Vivid sketches of landscapes and people met during her perpetual wanderings are interspersed with financial struggles, the minutiae of relationships with dealers, and reflections on her work and that of others.

Most of these letters were tracked down and acquired for Alexander Turnbull Library by E. H. McCormick, who also transcribed them. The selection and editing has been done by Linda Gill, who in her introduction provides new perspectives to what is already known about Frances Hodgkins, especially on the difficulties she faced as a woman painter determined on a serious professional career.
