In Search of the Rainbow: The Coromandel Story By Coromandel Town History Research Group
Foreword:
Having holidayed on the Coromandel Peninsula since the 1940s, and lived on the peninsula since 1970 - the last 17 years in Coromandel - my interest in this fascinating area, so full of history, has known no bounds.
On moving to Coromandel town from Whitianga, where I was very involved with the Mercury Bay Historic Society, I found that many people had compiled short accounts of certain historical events, but there was no comprehensive history covering Coromandel's kaleidoscopic development from the 1780s through to what we know as Coromandel today.
So a dream was born! To write a book covering all facets of the history of the area from- Te Kouma to Koputauaki, that may provide the answers to long-standing questions.
The logical first step was the forming of the Coromandel Historical Society in 1992. It has an emphasis on recorded history, a good bank of reference material and with the help of many people supplying photos and written material, the seed was sown. In 2000 the Coromandel Town History Research Group was formed to achieve the reality.
