Who are we and where did we come from, with this strange little name, HORN?

In Burke’s General Armory, Reaney’s Dictionary of British Surnames, it is suggested that it came from someone being resident near a spur or tongue of land or bend in a river. Alternatively, it could have originated from a hornblower, shortened to Horn for convenience.

It is with Robert Horn, born in the 1600s, that we have a definite connection. How wonderful it would be if each one of our forebears had been able to write and preserve even a little diary so that we could trace our origins back even further. However, for the appreciation of our New Zealand family, it is enough that our story commences with Jeremiah Horn who was born at Preston-under-Scar in the Yorkshire Dales, England, in 1816.

I have taken the liberty of recording in our story, a diary written by George William Horn and a number of letters. Although the grammar, punctuation and spelling are not as we are accustomed to today, I have recorded them here with great respect and an appreciation that they didn’t have the opportunities in life that we have been privileged to enjoy. Indeed, there were people in Jeremiah Horn’s generation, who had to sign documents with a cross or their own special mark.
