In the Shadow of Maungataniwha By Olwyn Ramsey
A history of Victoria Valley, Mangatoetoe & Te Puhi districts
This book relates the history of three small valleys, Victoria, Mangatoetoe and Te Puhi, situated north of the Maungataniwha Ranges, and linked from the time of European settlement in 1865. Tracing the gradual development of the area from a Maori village and a minor stop on the early missionaries' northward track to the Kaitaia Mission Station, to the thriving farming district it had become by the 1950s. This volume explores the problems of isolation that hindered progress as well as the industries which supported it, and describes the pioneer families whose energy and motivation laid the foundations for what is now one of the most desirable rural areas of New Zealand's Far North. The story, full of engaging detail and drawing on an impressive variety of historical sources, is richly illustrated with maps, photographs and newspaper excerpts.
It is told with affection and humour by Olwyn Ramsey, a fourth generation Victoria Valley-ite, who grew up on the farm previously settled by her great grandfather. She was educated at the local primary school and Whangarei Girls' High School. Olwyn is an historian with a passion for Far North history, enjoys historical research and genealogy, and for many years was in charge of archives at the Far North Regional Museum.
