Description
Niagara Gold By R.J. Dunn
The romantic story of sunken treasure retrieved from record ocean depths, New Zealand
Gold bars weighing approximately ten toms and valued at approximately £2,397,600 were retrieved from the wreck of the "Niagara," lying in the open Pacific, 30 miles from Bream Head at the entrance to Whangarei Harbour. This represented bullion which the Royal Mail steamer took to the bottom with her when she sank one hour forty minutes after striking a mine on June 19, 1940.
Veiled in the greatest secrecy throughout, operations extended over a period from December 15, 1940, to December 7, 1941, when the last bar was brought to the surface and the moorings of the salvage vessel were finally lifted.
The "Niagara" lay 438 feet below the surface, a depth at which successful salvage had never been undertaken.
