'John MacGibbon fitted neatly into the emigrant capitalist mould. He was respectable, and as a small businessman he was in a position to invest in the colony and employ labour. His Glasgow business was in decline, and he needed to take drastic action or face the posibility of slithering down to the lower ranks of society- a common middle class fear that emigration promoters openly played on. Being a devout member of the free church, his religious credentials were impeccable. John MacGibbon and his family began a new life at the 'Ends of the Earth' in 1849. This book looks at why they did it, how they did it and how they managed in their new country- first in Dunedin and later in Eastern Southland. MacGibbon family members are central to the story, but they are not the only characters in the plot. Going Abroad attempts to give a broad picture of the emigration and early colonial experience of the Scots who emigrated to New Zealand's Deep South'
