Description

Here is Upper Hutt as it was, as it never will be again. From the coming of the first pioneers to the 1950’s the districts history and happenings, comings and goings are recorded here in photographs and informative text. We visit Main Street in the days of the horse and cart, we pass by Silverstream when houses were few and empty paddocks many: we pause before the disastrous fire and explosion at Benge & Pratts in 1914 and enjoy the thrill of being at the Races when Great Sensation wins his third Cup in succession. Angus McCurdy, the town’s first Mayor and local identity is here: so to is Arthur Clouston and a host of locals pass us by in this journey of the district from the days of bush covered landscape to the advent of a City. Upper Hutt can be justifiably proud of that journey.
