Aurora Australis 1908-09

Reprint (1988) of First Book written, edited, illustrated, and published in Antarctica, during the winter of 1908 in their small hut at Cape Royds, Ross Is. From Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 during which they made the first ascent of the active volcano Mt. Erebus, crossed the polar plateau to locate the South Magnetic Pole.

This unique small volume documents some of these achievements and the brave men who carried out these amazing feats in such and extreme landscape, and who wrote the prose and poetry, produced the illustrations, printed and handbound the pages with twine. See selected scans.

Based on one of few bound copies known, located in Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, NZ.

Hardback Book and dust jacket both in excellent near new condition, approximately 100 unnumbered pages, unmarked!
