THE PALMS BEND DOWN by Winston Sargent
From a soldier's diaries and letters the author has created a vivid picture of the experience of a member of the N.Z. Division from the beginning of the War to the end of the North America Campaign.
The book deals with the bitter struggles in Greece and Crete and the turning of the tide of battle at the time when Rommel was almost in sight of Cairo.
Running through these accounts is the story of the young soldier himself and his personal reactions to the situations brought about by war.
There are also many descriptions of places visited, with interesting references to their historical background.
The author was born on the West Coast of the South Island, N.Z. He was educated in Christchurch, enlisting while a student at Canterbury University College. He was sent overseas with the 1st. Echelon and this book was written whilst he was on furlough in the Dominion.
