'I have set the book out in a progressive format beginning with biographical details of James Gear himself, moving on to a brief historical analysis of Petone and then a more chronological account of the Company itself. I wanted to look at its workings and its performances over its long tenure adjacent to Petone beach. Specifically, I then examined three unusual yet quite remarkable components of the Company, namely the storage hulk Jubilee and Petone Wharf, Gear island, and the Beach railway.
