Description
Published 1966 by A H & A W Reed, Wellington (1st edition)
Hardback (no dust jacket); 96pp + 32pp B/W plates
Written 20 years after the formation of what was, effectively, New Zealand’s National Orchestra, begun in October 1946 under the leadership of Vincent Aspey, this book also documents the story of its precursor, formed in 1939 by the (then) National Broadcasting Service, under the direction of English violinist Maurice Clare. Jensen writes about the conductors, its players and its management. This is a critical tribute to what is today, in the NZSO, a musical enterprise of which the and the NZ public are justifiably proud. There are many black and white photos of famous musicians incl of Stravinsky conducting the Orchestra on his visit to NZ.
Second-hand book in overall VG condition. Paper (title printed on cover and NZBC crest on back) rather than cloth binding over card, which makes up for lack of dust jacket. Some foxing and browning to endpapers. Page edges are foxed and a few pages have splotches of discoloration. Otherwise clean internally and stitching solid.
