Description
Tropic Fever: The Adventures of a Planter in Sumatra by Ladislao Szekely
Oxford paberbacks, translated by Marion Saunders
has the owners name in the fep but overall in very good condition
Tropic Fever, first published in English in 1937, is a remarkable semi-autobiographical account of a planter's life in Sumatra during the first two decades of [the twentieth] century. During this period East Sumatra was transformed 'from a jungle into a vast commercial garden', a process which has been described as 'amomg the largest ... of European successes in tropical lands'. From the viewpoint of the indentured workforce, on the other hand, the region had the aspect of an outdoor prison' in these pioneering decades. Ladislao Szekely was an active participant in these momentous changes (and brilliantly conveys his awe at the magnitude of the task), yet he was detached enough to see that the invasion of Western plantations 'had not really done the natives a particular favour'. He does not hide the brutality of the system
