Description
Pioneers of Martins Bay by Alice McKenzie Illustrated paperback book Very good condition
Signed by the compiler Alice Margaret Leaker
The Story of New Zealand's Most Remote Settlement.
A lively and personal narrative of pioneering settlement in remote South Westland, just north of Milford Sound. The author's father took his family to settle at Martins Bay in 1874 and she suceeds in conveying the reality of pioneering. Here is a story of hardship and endurance quite outside modern experience. As a child, Alice Mackenzie (née McKenzie) and her family moved from Hokitika to Jackson Bay in Westland. After that they moved to Jamestown on Lake McKerrow. The township of Jamestown flopped and the McKenzies drifted down to Martins Bay. The hardships and isolation that followed the move are innumerable. Alice grew up in these isolated and lonely conditions and grew up to write the book.
