Great British Trains By O.S. Nock
This is a story of the time before the private motor car and the internal airlines had supplanted the train as the premier means of long-distance travel in Great Britain.
The Royal Scot',
The Golden Arrow', The Queen of Scots' Pullman, and the
Torbay Limited' were symbolic of leisured daytime travel for the passengers if not for the engine crews and the names alone are enough to revive memories and stir the imagination.
There is plenty about locomotives and carriages, much of the passing scene, points about architecture, railway history and archaeology, not forgetting the vignettes of fellow travellers and railwaymen.
So far as the trains themselves are concerned the author has divided them into three broad categories; the first dealing with trains the character of which belongs essentially to the days before the first world war; the second concerning the inter-war period, and the first signs of the passing of the old elegance, and the third, the first essays into the breathless modern age.
The illustrations, particularly the reproductions in colour of early contemporary picture postcards, revive the atmosphere of the old railways, and of their magnificent engine and carriage liveries.
