Description
This is an auction for THE LETTERS OF JOHN MIDDLETON MURRY TO KATHERINE MANSFIELD, selected and edited by C A Hankin.
"The love affair and marriage of Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry is perhaps one of the most famous literary relationships of this century. (D H Lawrence depicted them as Gerald and Gudrun in 'Women in Love'.) It was also one of the most poignant for Katherine died of tuberculosis in her early thirties in 1923. Her own side of this stormy, intense relationship has been known for 50 years through her 'Letters' and 'Journal'. At the time Murry was criticised both for publishing them, and for the image of a cold, unscrupulous and uncaring lover in which they seemed to cast him. This selection of his letters to Katherine reveal him as a man who was drastically changed by her illness and the competing demands of his feelings for her and her own literary ambitions. There are tender, moving letters; there are letters that enraged Katherine; there are letters about their circle of friends, enemies and acquaintances: the Lawrences and 'The Woolves', Lady Ottoline Morrell, Bertrand Russell, H G Wells, T S Eliot and the many other writers and artists Murry met during his editorship of 'Rhythm' and 'The Athenaeum'."
