Skip Counting - Multiplication as Repeated Addition

Student’s in the early years at school need to be able to at least count fluently forwards and backwards by twos, fives and tens, starting at any number. As they progress the other number patterns are introduced.

Skip counting is important in the development of fluency in calculation.

When students can fluently recall the multiples (skipcount) the numbers 2-10 they are developing the basis of multiplication and division.

This ‘Teaching Timesaver’, which will be emailed to you as a .pdf file, is a great activity for reinforcing this aspect of Number Knowledge. (and a class favourite – students with a range of abilities playing at the same time, but with different numbers)

This resource includes a set of five A5 cards for each of the numbers 2-10 and a separate set of instructions on how to play the game. Each card has the multiples arranged on the number.

The game requires a card for each player and two dice marked 0-5 for the group.

Each player takes turns to throw the dice and multiply the total by the large number on the card. They then locate the answer and cover it with a counter. If the number is already covered, they miss a turn. The winner is the first person to have all their multiples covered.
