Description

This is a new Infrared filter to fit lenses with a filter size of 49mm

Infrared photography has been a film cameras area, but despite having an IR blocking filter installed between the lens and the CCD, most digital cameras still react to infrared energy, though at levels lower than visible light, particularly the late models. To take "infrared" pictures you need to filter out the visible light and only allow the infrared spectrum through to the lens. The easiest way to do this is to use an infrared filter. Infrared filters are graded according to the transmission of light. The lenses advertised are 850nm which is equivalent to Wratten 87C. Cameras. This is a partial list of cameras with relatively low infrared blockage:

  • Sony DSC F707, F717, F828, V1, V3, S50, P93,
  • Canon EOS EF Digital Rebel 300D, Digital Rebel XT 350D, PowerShot G1, Pro70, S110, S330, A200, A620, S60
  • Olympus E-1, E-10, E-20, E-300, E-500, C-2000, C-2020, C-5050Z, C-5060WZ, C-2100, C-3000, C-4040, X-200, D-560Z, C-350, C-7000, C-8080, C-750, C-770

  1. Set your custom white balance and photograph some grass (using aperture priority mode). Do this with the IR filter on the lens.
  2. Place the camera on a tripod. Remove the IR filter. Compose and focus your shot manually, with AF switched off. This will prevent the camera from trying to focus with the filter on, which 99% of the time it will not be able to do. Once this is done, screw the filter back onto the lens.
  3. Switch to aperture priority and set the desired aperture. By taking a shot determine what shutter speed is indicated. Then switch to manual mode and set the shutter speed as indicated from aperture priority. Take your first shot. Now, bracket a few with slower and quicker shutter speeds.
