Yellow filters add more natural deepening of colour to sky, water and foliage.

Green filters reduce blue and red. This affects blue skies in almost the same way as the yellow filter but differentiates better between delicate hues of grass and foliage.

Orange filters reduces blue as well as green. This yields more contrasting skies than yellow or green filters and creates some spectacular seascapes. It brightens yellow, orange and red, and noticeably darkens green. Be aware of secondary effects in green landscapes which would turn out rather dark with this filter.

Red (Kodak 25) almost completely suppresses blue and green. It is used to create dramatic contrast-- blue sky becomes almost black, and green landscapes darken. Marked contrasts are created with cloud and other objects in the scene. Haze is reduced and white surfaces appear brilliant. In portraiture skin appears porcelain white.

The blue filter is equivalent to 80B (1-2/3 stops). At twilight, it increases the blue in the scene to a rich cobalt blue as well as converting any tungsten lighting from yellow to white light. When photographing waterfalls or snow scenes it makes them appear slightly blue.

All these effects may be obtained with B & W film, or using the B & W mode of digital cameras.
