Usually only found in the tropics it is remarkable that New Zealand has its very own native palm tree. tall slender & very graceful it is easy to recognise in the bush. In Spring large clusters of mauve flowers burst from the base of the lowest leaf. The deep red pea like berries that follow are a particular delicacy o the native pigeon. The early Maori found the leaves very valuable for weaving ant thatching the sides of their houses. the fleshy juicy part at the top of the stem was also eaten. The Nikau does appreciate shelter.
