Description

A very prolific, easy to grow and fruitfully rewarding subtropical small tree endemic to the mountains of Ecuador, South America.

Easily one of the most fruitful of all the subtropical plants you can grown in NZ.

It produces large delicious fruits which are ripe for eating when they turn golden yellow. They can weigh up to 2kg ea.

The unripe green fruit can also be used to make the renown Thai Green Papaya Salad.

Babaco plants are self-fertile and very heavy croppers. The summer and autumn fruit are like a lemon flavoured melon - fragrant, juicy, sweetish with a touch of acidity. The fruit is best eaten fresh and slightly chilled. Great in fruit salads.

Babaco plants like a warm, sheltered sunny spot (but shaded from the hot afternoon sun) in organically rich, moisture retentive good draining soils. Ensure you provide shelter from wind. They are ideal grown in large tubs for warm sheltered patios.

In winter, provide overhead protection from cold winter rains & frosts. I find they are better grown in large tubs for this reason and I recommend you grow them this way.

These plants grow and fruit in the Hutt Valley (grown in tubs with overhead protection over winter).

You are bidding on one healthy established new seasons cutting grown plant in a 15cm pot. They make rapid growth over spring and summer. These plants will be of fruiting maturity next season, perhaps even this season.

It is preferable to purchase young new season Babaco plants as the more mature and taller the plant, the less productive they are.

Photo 1: Showing the Mother plant in fruit over summer (not the plant you are bidding on).

Photo 2: Chilled ripe Babaco fruit sliced and ready to enjoy. You eat the skin and all, there are no seeds, pips. They are a really refreshing fruit to eat on a hot summers day!

Full cultural and growing information provided.
