Description
Organic Chia seeds (no less than 500 seeds) by Carols Heirloom Garden - Providing quality Heirloom (Heritage) NON-GMO seed since 2009.
Chia (Salvia hispanica) seeds contain many vitamins, minerals & enzymes, and the goodness is increased when seeds are sprouted. They are approx the same size as Alfalfa seeds.
Growing instructions are on the pack.
The plant is attractive in the garden, & takes approx 12 weeks to reach maturity.
Chia likes a light soil, & does best in my garden where there is not much organic matter or nitrogen. Sow Spring to Summer. Pinch out growing tips to encourage more flowers.
Harvest the whole stems when about 60% of the seed capsules have begun to brown. Tie several stems together & hang upside down in a cool, airy place, & out of sunlight. The seeds are easily extracted from dried mature flower heads by rubbing against a sieve. Winnow to remove the light chaff from the seeds. Store in a glass container in the pantry.
Goodies in Chia Chia seeds contain 8 essential amino acids, is 30% protein & has linoleic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid & mucilage. This makes it a very beneficial addition to the diet.
