Physalis edulis Tangy, delicious fruits are produced within a papery case. The fruit inside looks a bit like a yellow cherry, and tastes like a sweet tomato. They can be eaten raw, dipped in melted chocolate or stewed like plums and be made into jam and pies. Use to decorate cheesecakes, pavlovas and gateaux. Fruit is ready when the calyx has turned golden brown. If fruit is left in the inedible husk it can be stored for one to two months.

Also grows and fruits well in a pot or may be used as a border plant where the soft grey-green foliage can be used to offset other species.

Plant in well drained soil. Pinch out new shoots to encourage bushy growth. Will require some support. Prune back hard in spring to encourage new growth for fruiting. Feed in spring with balanced fertiliser or mulch with compost.
