Alpha Cast's singer Michael McLeod takes his songwriting to the next level and morphs into The Alpha State, a delicious alt country tinged affair with shimmering melody over slow moods. McLeod has assembled a new team of talents to sparsely shade his deeply melodic songs, the result is 9 tracks of catchy low key wonder.

If it doesn't become apparent at first listen, it's likely to hit you by the second: Mike McLeod, frontman of Dunedin band Alpha State, is an exceptional songwriter.

Though he clearly prefers to mix his melody with a decent dash of melancholy, the overall effect of this debut album is joyous as McLeod and company move from the dark alt-country strains of Better For You to the more upbeat Summer Sun and Moving On.

At play here is an understated yet classy musicianship. Little is obvious or signposted; it's simply well-placed, well-spaced and well-paced.
