Description
A 1967-8 Guyatone LG-150T … in red! The guitar shape is nuts - German Carve sort of Mosrite on LSD.... crazy...... and a total head turner.
4 pickup version demoed here but the Surf/Garage sound is bang on :https://youtu.be/DKEkHU9tfzs
At the time, there was a huge ’wave’ of popularity for ‘surf’ music in Japan. The Ventures were treated like gods by the Japanese youth and spawned hundreds of imitators. The demand for Mosrite guitars in Japan continues to this day. Naturally, Guyatone and others jumped on the band wagon, producing Mosrite inspired guitars for a hungry market.
For a few years there they got pretty wild! The LG-150T was one of an inspired range of build designs from Guyatone around this time but they rarely made it out of Japan. I have never seen another of these or any of this line of Guyatone guitars up for sale or being played anywhere in NZ in over ten years of watching TradeMe.
My theory is that back then they were just too expensive for importers in NZ so we only got the cheaper models which I believe were mostly made by Kawai anyway, (Diplomat, Marunuci, etc.) This also explains why we never got any '60's Yamahas - well that's my theory.
Back to this guitar: It's in pretty good nick. Usual nicks and dings but nothing major. The whammy bar is a bit rusty and the pickguard has a crack between the end of the neck and the neck pickup but it is not going anywhere. The Volume knob, while original has lost the little circular plate with ‘V’ on it. I have inked a “V” on there for you! (If you ever find the proper bit it will be covered up).
Nice playing guitar with an easy straight neck and good action. Frets are good. Electrics are original. All work as they should. 24 3/4" scale. Correct roller bridge and whammy bar - both very hard to find! Original 'Jaguar like' pickups (they have that claw like metal bracket but on these it's inside the white plastic cover unseen. All good to go.
Soft case and it'll be packed well.
Super cool surf guitar… cowabunga and all that!
