If the volume or tone controls on your electric guitar seem to have all their action at one end of the scale rather than being nice and gradual, then you probably have pots with linear taper rather than audio taper. This issue is extremely common on entry level guitars and not unheard of on some more expensive guitars too.

The best manufacturers use audio taper pots for more even volume/tone control. Changing your pots to audio taper can make a huge difference to the usability of your guitars controls. Check your pots now, they will probably look similar to the ones in our photo. If the code begins with an "A" it's audio taper, "B" means linear taper. Note the 250K pots are recommended for guitars with single coil pickups. If your guitar has one or more humbucking pickups, we generally recommend you use 500KOhm audio taper pots instead.
