Description
Super rare Klemt Echolette Showstar S-40 tube amp head made in West Germany sometime in the early to mid 1960s.
The S-40 is a 2xEL34 all tube amplifier head, using ECC808's in it's preamp stages.
Rated 40 watts with an impedance selector switch on the back that switches between 5 ohms and 20 ohms.
The amp features two channels, each with two inputs and controls for volume, treble and bass. The "vibrato" channel also has controls for speed and intensity of a tremolo which can be switched off with the intensity knob. There is also a presence control and standby and mains switches on the front panel. All labels are written in both English and German.
The back panel has single speaker out jack and above this a line out jack that was added by Clarry Schollum of 34 Audio several years ago.
Functionally everything is working great and the tone is to die for.
Cosmetically it is in good condition for it's age, with just the usual scuffs and small tears in the leather. The front face plate looks great but the metal panel on the back is showing it's age with signs of rust. In hindsight I should have taken photos of the top (which has a vent) and sides (which have handles) so I will add those tomorrow.
The following link provide a good review of technical aspects of essentially the same amp and comparisons of the sound with other amps:

Note that this model does not have the connection for a tremolo footswitch and "lights off" switch mentioned in that review.
