Description
Fresh in from Chicago, the Dizengoff Audio D-4 preamp is the brain child of former Black Lion Audio owner/designer Matt Newport.
Dizengoff Audio has been set up to manufacturer limited run classic pieces built in the USA and made with locally sourced components.
First cab off the the rank is the D 4 preamp which is based on the famous EMI Recording Engineering Development Department console heard on recordings by the Beatles, the Zombies and Pink Floyd between 1964 and 68.
At the preamp's heart is an EF86 pentode tube that’s often considered to be the sound of John Lennon’s “Revolution,” which used two console channels in series to achieve an overdriven sound.
Input and output transformers are Custom wound in Chicago and are based on the originals but take advantage of contemporary materials. The input transformers are a high nickel content (80%)and the outputs have a lower (50%) nickel content for excellent fidelity.
Whilst the original console featured three gain settings (+36, +40, and +46), and a ‘fine trim’ knob that allowed the user to trim gain by a few dB, the D4 has expanded that range from +20 up to +60 using a 12 step rotary attenuator and like the original design, the D4 ‘trim’ control allows the user to fine tune the gain by 2-4dB depending upon the gain switch setting.
