Description
Absolutely stunning large pot which stands 5 1/2" high and is 4 1/2" across the opening.
As can be seen by the photo there is a recess for a lid which unfortunately is missing, so it was originally a tobacco jar.
However, lid, or not, it is a magnificent piece for the Gallant Fishers collector and I think it looks best displayed at eye level so that it displays as a pot or vase, rather than a lidless tobacco jar.
This is such a rare shape to find in this series that the chances of finding the correct lid would be fairly unlikely, though not impossible - you could find a complete one with a damaged pot, and pair the two up. It's been suggested to me that a lid could be made, but in any case I feel it's a wonderful old piece of china, regardless, and the picture is wonderful and clear. The two sleeping fishermen, back to back.
There are no chips or cracks on the pot. There is some crazing, particularly toward the top of the back with some light staining that I've tried to show in the photo, and also stained crazing on the base. I see a slight irregularity on the green trim at the top, visible in the photo but I don't see any other evidence that it has been touched up or repaired.
There's no verse, and I wonder if it had been written around the outer edge of the lid? I've attached a photo of an Isaac Walton tobacco jar, same shape so I'm almost certain the verse would be written around the top, and note the rounded shape of the lid, and the large knob.
I hope someone will love to add it to their collection even though it's not quite complete, it's still utterly gorgeous!
