The most common version of the Mustang family of planes was the P-51D, with more than 7,956 being manufactured. The 78th Fighter Group's most colorful P-51D, assigned to Lt. Col. John D. Landers, was called the Big Beautiful Doll. This model includes a bubble canopy on a cut down fuselage spine, "paper laminated" drop tanks, a lift off engine panel and wing machine gun access panel.
