Description

Livestock Manager/Senior Farm Hand – Mid Canterbury What’s on offer:

  • Competitive hourly rate
  • Average of 45 hours per week
  • Opportunity to grow and learn traditional farming

We’re seeking a capable, hands-on Senior Farm Hand with a strong livestock background to join a 360-hectare mixed arable and livestock farm located between Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia. Working alongside the owner, this role is ideal for someone who enjoys responsibility, takes pride in good stock work, and wants to be a key part of the day-to-day running of the farm.

While the farm has a solid arable programme, this role has more focus on the livestock aspect. You’ll play a lead role, with responsibility for animal health, feeding, shifting stock and general animal husbandry. You’ll be trusted to use your judgement and experience, producing optimal results - particularly when the owner is off farm. The cropping programme includes cereals, clover, radish, maize and grass seed, and you’ll also be involved in machinery operation at key times of the season. However, strong arable experience is not essential — competency and confidence around stock is the priority.

The livestock system finishes approximately 150 heifers and 160 Angus steers, and winters around 2,500 store lambs, providing plenty of hands-on stock work throughout the year.

Key requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years’ practical farming experience
  • Your own working dog under good control
  • Proven, calm stockmanship
  • Sound tractor skills and willingness to assist with arable work
  • Strong work ethic, reliability and pride
  • A Class 2 licence could place your application at an advantage.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys being hands-on with stock, wants more responsibility, and values a traditional, well-run farming operation. For the right candidate there is a 3 bedroom house with log burner available on farm.

Applicants must have NZ residency or a valid NZ working visa. (If you do not have a vlaid NZ work visa your application will not be responded to)
