As New Zealand’s largest pig farm, Patoa Farms has a team of approximately 60 people who manage the care of approximately 5,000 breeding sows and their progeny.
We have a full-time hybrid role available – we are seeking a trade qualified Butcher (or holds solid industry experience) to work as a combination between butchery and as a general hand.
Key Responsibilities & Required Sills – Butcher A farm butcher at Patoa Farms processes animals which have been injured, and not able to be put on transport.
Applicants must demonstrate a proven capability to manage all the following areas successfully:
- euthanise any pigs as required by the farm managers or other approved person
- process any pigs as per instructions from management that need to be euthanised and are fit for human consumption
- break down any sows for processing as required
- always keep all equipment clean and in a safe working condition
- work in developing SOPs for tasks related to the butchery
- ensure all knives and butchery tools meet appropriate safety standards
- ensure that the chillers are always working as designed to the required temperature for the safe storage of meat as required
- operate and store any firearms safely as per the arms code. Firearms license is preferred.
Key Responsibilities - Butchery & General Hand The Butchery & General Hand shall be responsible to help practically on the farm where required. Experience in repairs and maintenance is advantageous.
Tasks may be, but are not limited to:
- Assisting in building and repair work e.g. pig huts, roofing, foundations, plumbing/water lines work, gates, site preparation
- Landcare assistance e.g. gardening, mowing, weed spraying & control
- Weaning
- General stock work
- Machinery operation
Hours & Rate
- This is a full-time hybrid role. Some weekend work may be required.
- Pay rate is dependent on experience.
