We’re recruiting on behalf of a well-established civil construction business based in Mercer. With projects across Waikato and Auckland, they run a strong fleet of heavy diesel plant and predominantly CAT machinery and they’re looking for a hands-on Heavy Diesel Plant Mechanic to keep it performing at its best.
This is a key role in the workshop, focused on keeping plant safe, compliant, reliable and ready to go. You’ll work closely with the Workshop & Transport Manager and Head Mechanic, supporting site teams by minimising downtime and maintaining high fleet standards.
You’ll be responsible for servicing, diagnostics, maintenance and repair of heavy diesel plant and earthmoving machinery.
Day-to-day you will:
- Service, maintain and repair heavy diesel plant (predominantly CAT machinery) in line with manufacturer and safety standards
- Carry out diagnostics and fault finding across mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems
- Complete scheduled servicing and proactive maintenance to reduce breakdowns
- Respond to breakdowns and carry out on-site repairs when required
- Inspect, service and repair plant, attachments and site equipment
Workshop Responsibilities
- Safely operate tools and equipment during repairs
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop
- Assist with inventory management, parts ordering and consumables
- Travel to site when required to keep crews operational
- Accurately complete job cards and service records using digital systems (including 3PM Construction platform)
Health & Safety
- Health and safety is non-negotiable. You will:
- Follow and promote company H&S policies and procedures
- Identify, stop and report unsafe practices
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times
- Attend and contribute to H&S meetings
- Comply with all site-specific safety requirements when attending breakdowns
What They’re Looking For
- Full NZ Class 1 driver’s licence
- Trade qualified in Heavy Diesel, Automotive Engineering, or strong equivalent hands-on experience
- Strong diagnostic and fault-finding capability
- Physically fit and comfortable with hands-on, demanding work
- High attention to detail and pride in workmanship
- Confident using digital systems in a workshop environment
- Positive, practical, can-do attitude
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexible and willing to support other areas of the business when required
