We are seeking a highly skilled and professional Car & Machinery Spray Painter to join our operations team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation, application, and finishing of paint coatings on vehicles and plant machinery, ensuring all work is completed to the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance. A sound understanding of metal repair and fabrication processes is advantageous to support overall workshop efficiency and quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare vehicle and machinery surfaces through cleaning, sanding, masking, priming, and surface restoration in accordance with industry best practices
  • Accurately mix and match paint colours to manufacturer specifications and job requirements
  • Operate spray-painting equipment and paint booth systems safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company procedures
  • Apply coatings evenly and consistently to achieve a superior, professional finish
  • Liaise effectively with the welding and fabrication team to ensure surfaces are prepared correctly prior to painting
  • Maintain, clean, and service spray guns, compressors, and associated equipment
  • Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental policies and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate effectively with supervisors, technicians, and production teams to ensure timely and high-quality project delivery

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Trade qualified in automotive refinishing, panel beating, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years' proven experience in automotive or machinery spray painting and refinishing
  • Sound understanding of rust repair processes and MIG/TIG welding principles (desirable, not essential)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of paint systems, surface preparation techniques, and finishing processes
  • Proven ability to operate spray-painting and paint booth equipment competently
  • Exceptional attention to detail, including precise colour matching and surface consistency
  • Strong understanding of occupational health and safety standards, including PPE and chemical handling
  • Reliable, physically fit, and capable of standing for extended periods and performing repetitive manual tasks
  • Legal right to work in New Zealand / NZ resident status

Preferred Competencies/Personal Attributes:

  • Formal certification or vocational training in automotive painting, refinishing, or a related field
  • Experience working with both water-based and solvent-based coating systems
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation, specifications, and work instructions
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining high standards and delivering top-quality finishes
  • A strong team player who contributes positively to workplace culture and collaboration
  • Punctual, honest, and dependable
  • Positive, self-motivated, and proactive attitude
  • Ability to work to deadlines and timeframes, with a willingness to go the extra mile to achieve outstanding results
