Thompson Precast Ltd
Listing Description
Description
Precast concrete manufacturing offers the unique satisfaction of seeing tangible results from your efforts in a short timeframe. The dynamic environment brings together a range of skills, from carpentry to construction, making every day different and rewarding.
Variety of Precast Concrete Work
Precast concrete manufacture encompasses multiple forms and tasks. Central to the work is the process of setting up precast moulds and building formwork—tasks that rely on carpentry skills and a keen eye for detail. The versatility of concrete means it can be used across various sectors, including commercial, residential, industrial, agricultural, and infrastructure projects. The material’s ability to reflect the texture and shape of whatever it is poured against allows for creative architectural features, tailored to the client’s needs and enhancing the final appearance of any building.
Key Responsibilities and Daily Tasks
- Physical Preparation: Prepping the casting beds by cleaning steel surfaces and buffing them with a walk behind polisher.
- Formwork and Assembly: Setting up the formwork that frames each concrete panel, placing inserts, and other structural or lifting components with accuracy.
- Quality Control: Undertaking checks to ensure all components are inserted according to design specifications and recording these details for quality assurance.
- Concrete Placement and Finishing: Pouring and vibrating concrete to eliminate air pockets, finishing the surface and using hand trowels and walk-behind kellyfloats for a polished result.
- Reinforcement: Tying reinforcing cages, cutting, and measuring materials to ensure structural integrity.
- Plan Reading: Reading and interpreting fabrication drawings is vital for accurate production and assembly.
- Gantry Crane operation and handling
Skills and Physical Requirements
Success in precast concrete manufacturing requires physical fitness, as the role involves lifting, climbing, reaching, and stretching throughout the day. Candidates need a solid base in carpentry, particularly for building custom formwork from timber, and the ability to cut materials precisely using table and drop saws is highly valued. Experience with hand tools and power tools, along with a willingness to learn, are essential attributes.
Training and Support
New employees are supported with training and assistance to help them learn and refine the wide array of skills needed for the job. The company fosters a team environment, ensuring that all workers are equipped to contribute to projects safely and effectively.
Licensing and Equipment Operation
To further expand their skills, employees are required to have training in the operation of gantry cranes and to have a New Zealand driver’s licence. The driver's license is a prerequisite for training in W and F licence endorsements, which are necessary for operating forklifts and material handlers. These qualifications allow employees to safely lift and shift materials around the yard, broadening their responsibilities and career opportunities.
Additional Site Capabilities
Beyond panel manufacture, the plant also cuts and bends reinforcing steel, both for use in precast elements and for site construction footings and concrete foundations. This adds further variety and technical challenge to the role.
