Description
BestStart Elles Road is on the lookout for a passionate, dedicated, and fully qualified Registered Teacher to step into the role of Head Teacher in our Kauri room, working with our confident and capable 3.5–5-year-old tamariki.
Located in the heart of South City, Invercargill, our centre is a warm, community-focused space where tamariki are encouraged to explore, grow, and lead their own learning. We champion autonomy, rich play-based experiences, and equitable outcomes for every child.
Our centre priorities—Mana Reo (Communication), Whanaungatanga (Relationships), and Kaitiakitanga (Sustainability)—guide everything we do. We're also proud participants in the Wild @ Heart Bush Programme, where our four-year-olds connect deeply with nature and learn how to care for their environment and community.

- $2000 Refer-a-Teacher bonus for referring a qualified teacher*
- One week of additional leave after 10 years of service
About the Role
This is a permanent, full-time position (40 hours, Monday–Friday) on a rotating roster.
In the Kauri room, we prepare tamariki for a confident transition to primary school through our “Set for School” play-based curriculum. This programme builds foundational skills, strengthens relationships with whānau, and fosters strong connections with local kura and our wider community.
Our Wild @ Heart programme supports children to explore the natural world and develop a sense of guardianship. With a spacious, engaging outdoor environment, tamariki are encouraged to challenge themselves physically, building confidence and resilience.
We support smooth transitions through parent evenings, visits from new entrant Kaiako, and a strong partnership with Fernworth Primary School, where a Kaiako visits weekly to share stories with our children. Our dedicated “Set for School” wall celebrates learning milestones such as independence, turn-taking, and problem-solving.
The Kauri room is a vibrant, energetic space where passionate Kaiako work closely with each child, helping them develop self-help skills, confidence, and pride in their achievements—setting them up for success at school and beyond.
What We're Looking For
We're seeking a natural leader who shares our values and vision—someone who is reflective, collaborative, and committed to high-quality teaching and learning.
You will bring:
- A BEd/Dip Teaching Level 7 (ECE or Primary) and a current practising certificate
- Strong knowledge of programme planning, pedagogy, and curriculum
- A solid understanding of ECE regulations, Te Whāriki, and compliance expectations
- A genuine passion for teaching, learning, and delivering quality outcomes
- A growth mindset and enthusiasm for leading and inspiring others
Join Our Whānau
At BestStart, you'll be part of a supportive, innovative, and celebratory team culture. We value diversity, individuality, and the unique strengths each Kaiako brings. If you're passionate about making a meaningful difference for tamariki, you'll feel right at home with us.
