Description

  • Lead a high-impact team improving safety and performance across Lower Hutt’s transport network
  • Manage a varied programme of minor transport infrastructure improvements
  • Provide trusted technical leadership and advice across Council’s transport activities

About the Role

We’re seeking an experienced Transport Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for identifying and resolving complex technical issues and delivering targeted improvements across Council’s transport network.

Reporting to the Head of Transport, you’ll provide strong people leadership to a team of engineers while setting the technical direction for transport engineering services. You’ll oversee the development and delivery of minor infrastructure improvements, such as pedestrian crossings, roundabouts and resilience-related works, ensuring designs, cost estimates and schedules are robust and fit for purpose.

Working closely with colleagues across Maintenance, Operations, Project Delivery and asset planning, you’ll provide expert engineering input into transport projects and programmes, helping to prioritise work and deliver value for money outcomes. You’ll also support governance requirements, including technical reports and advice for elected members, and contribute to investment and performance requirements, including engagement with Waka Kotahi.

As a member of the Transport Leadership Team, you’ll bring an operational lens to wider planning and decision-making, helping to shape a safe, efficient and resilient network for our city.

About You

You’re a confident people leader with strong technical credibility and sound engineering judgement. You can balance competing priorities, build trusted relationships across the organisation, and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A recognised tertiary qualification, ideally in Civil Engineering
  • Demonstrated experience as a traffic or transportation engineer
  • Strong knowledge of traffic engineering principles, policies and relevant legislation
  • Experience managing engineering projects, ideally within a local government transport context
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a high-performing professional team

It would also be advantageous if you have:

  • Knowledge of road maintenance and asset lifecycle requirements
  • Chartered Professional Engineer status, or working toward it
