Do you have a genuine interest in working with metals and making or fixing things? Keep reading. New Zealand needs to build a skilled workforce and ATNZ are currently looking for mechanically minded individuals who want to start a career in Heavy Fabrication. We are recruiting Heavy Fabrication apprentices for our host company located in Cambridge. If successful you will be employed by ATNZ and assigned to this host company where you will receive valuable on the job training while studying to become a fully qualified engineer.
What does a Heavy Fabrication Apprentice do?
Working with metals, fabricators make everything from steel parts to structures that are used anywhere. Heavy Fabricators work with heavier gauge plates, sections, and pipes, to produce a wide variety of products including trailers, earthmoving machinery, manufacturing equipment and more. About the Host Company:
Our host company is a well-established metal fabrication and welding business in the Waikato region, servicing a broad range of commercial and industrial clients. Their work spans heavy fabrication, structural and transport steelwork, and general welding repairs. This is straight practical, hands-on work delivered to a high standard.
It can get messy. It's dusty, it's dirty, and the work is physical. That's just the nature of heavy steel fabrication! The owner-operator runs a tight ship and has high expectations around attendance, focus, and work ethic. He's a straight-talker who calls it as he sees it, and he'll invest in developing the right person. But you'll need to be able to take direct feedback and not take it personally. If you turn up consistently, put your phone away, and give the job your full effort, you'll fit right in. If that sounds like your kind of environment, we'd love to hear from you.

- How long does an apprenticeship take to complete?
3 – 4 years. This may be shorter if you have completed a level 3 pre-trade qualification. - How much do apprenticeships pay? It varies between host companies. But the average annual salary for most of our apprentices is $41’000-$52’000. You may receive a higher or lower amount than this bracket depending on your skill level and the financial ability of the host company.
- Is there an upper age limit for apprenticeships? None. Anyone aged 16 or over with the right to permanently live and work in New Zealand is allowed to undertake an apprenticeship.
- Do I need my own tools? Some companies provide tools, while others require you to have your own. It is always good to build a supply of your own for the future. One of the benefits of being employed directly by ATNZ is we offer our apprentices interest-free loans for tools.
- What qualifications do I need to get an ATNZ apprenticeship? No qualifications are necessary. We are looking for people with a great attitude and a good work ethic who want to be hands-on and earn something they are passionate about.
- Are there any fees for being an ATNZ apprentice? Whether you are employed by ATNZ or do your apprenticeship through your current employer, apprentices pay no fees.
- What happens if my host company does not have enough work for me? Another advantage of being employed directly by ATNZ is that if your host company can't continue employing you for whatever reason, we will do our best to place you with another host company.

The ATNZ story ATNZ was created as a trust in 1999 to provide dedicated and focused training for apprentices in the engineering and manufacturing industries.
From humble origins in Hawkes Bay, ATNZ expanded quickly to become a national organisation and is now New Zealand’s largest employer of apprentices in mechanical engineering and related industries. ATNZ employs over 370 apprentices throughout New Zealand, hosted by over 170 companies.

PTE establishment ATNZ, formerly a subsidiary of the Competenz ITO, became a stand-alone Trust in 2021 due to the disestablishment of ITOs under the government’s reform of vocational education (RoVE).
In August 2022, ATNZ achieved NZQA registration as a PTE, which will commence operations in January 2023. This registration enables us to provide our apprenticeship programmes and other training to create a more robust, future focused workforce for the engineering and manufacturing sectors.
PTE registration also allows us to provide the industry with the flexibility of non-employed apprenticeships for an annual fee and our well-established hosting model. These two options, which both include customised apprentice mentoring and the development of better training materials, are tailored to produce better results for companies that want to invest in their people.
