Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Health Care Assistant to join our team to cover parental leave till 1 December 2026. As a Health Care Assistant in our Maternity Ward, you will play an essential role in supporting midwives, nurses, and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, compassionate, and high quality care for wahine, pepi, and whanau.

Your day will be varied from assisting with patient care and comfort, to supporting clinical tasks (once trained), to helping keep the ward running smoothly. At the heart of this role is care: respecting patient dignity, ensuring comfort, and contributing to an environment where whanau feel supported and safe.

Key responsibilities:

  • Keeping the ward tidy, well organised, and stocked.
  • Helping with patient flow by ensuring discharge beds are cleaned and made up quickly.
  • Assisting women with mobilising and showering.
  • Assisting women with baby cares.
  • Answering call bells and escalating concerns to nurses or midwives to ensure patient needs are met in a timely manner

About the Service

The Maternity Service at Waikato Hospital has around four thousand births a year. As well as caring for women in the Waikato, we are also the tertiary hospital for the Te Manawa Taki region for women requiring complex care. The Maternity ward provides care for a mix of antenatal and postnatal women, and their pepi where their antenatal, labour and birth journey has often been complicated.

We are one of the largest hospitals on one campus in the Southern Hemisphere but we are also a close knit community with great staff support.
