Community Support Worker - Porirua-Tawa

Part-Time: 16-24 hours per week

$23.50-$29.10

Titahi Bay location

We currently have a weekend-based role (Saturday/Sunday with Friday afternoon optional) with our children's respite house at Spectrum Care. We're looking for team members to help kids and teenagers with intellectual disabilities to feel safe and have fun while staying at our respite house in Titahi Bay.

You will need to know how to liven things up, and calm things down, to notice how children are feeling, and to provide them with guidance, comfort or support as needed. You will need to be vigilant, warm, and creative. Additionally, as the children have a vast range of communication styles, an ability or interest in learning to find effective ways to communicate is very much preferred.

Skills & Experience

• Empathy for the challenges of trying to build an ordinary life while living with a disability
• Energy to keep up with someone who likes to be on the go a lot
• Ability to remain calm, and calming, in all situations
• Resilience to help people keep boundaries to ensure their safety
• Good at explaining and negotiating
• Ability to communicate effectively and supportively with family, colleagues and the person you support
• Ability and willingness to provide support and motivation with personal cares and daily living skills

The ideal candidate will have:

• Excellent, clear, understandable verbal and written English is a pre-requisite to be considered for this role
• Able to pass a NZ police check
• Experience supporting people with disabilities, and or mental health issues, and/or behaviours that can be challenging is desirable but not necessary
• Reliability, commitment, and passion for working with people
• A full New Zealand driver's licence
• An interest in attaining a Community Support Worker Level Three or above qualification- we can support you to achieve this while you work
• The ability to use a computer effectively, including programs such as Word, Internet Explorer, and email

If you are a non-resident applying for this role you must meet the following INZ Level 3 skill requirements to be considered:

• Have worked in the care workforce for 2 years or more, and been paid at least the care workforce wage rate during that time, or
• A relevant qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) — this must be at least a level 4 qualification for a role at skill level 3, or a diploma for a role at skill level 2.
