FLAX & Co. is in the heart of the Preston’s community, in an idyllic location overlooking the water. We are seeking an experienced chef to work with us on a temporary contract over the winter. You will work alongside a strong management team to deliver a premium casual, all day dining, fresh food menu which sits alongside a premium-drinks offering of the best New Zealand wines, craft beer and Switch coffee.
We are a foodie venue, and our kitchen team is instrumental in maintaining the venues reputation and ensuring customer satisfaction. All our food is prepared in-house and we are looking for a Senior Chef that can deliver dishes reflective of the venues concept and target market, incorporating seasonal and local ingredients.
We know that to deliver our vision we need an enthusiastic and passionate small team of professionals who genuinely love food and have a track record of delivering dishes of the highest quality.
Flax (Harakeke) is a traditional Māori symbol of community and unity, and we very much want to embody that, enticing visitors from both near and far to join us for delicious brunch or dinner & drinks.
Are you organised, with attention to detail and the ability to deliver and maintain the highest standards?
To be eligible for this role -
- A proven track record working as a senior chef in a busy fresh food venue
- Ability to work flexibly and in a small team and do whatever is required to ensure a smooth service
- Experience working to budgets and managing stock and ordering
- Experience managing kitchen staff and managing shifts
- Rights to live and work in New Zealand
- Flexible to work a mixture of days, nights and weekends and be available throughout the peak seasons.
- Great communication skills and willing to work closely with the whole team, owners and community.

General Job Description -
- Oversee food preparation
- Preparing food to meet the required specifications
- Working to recipes and controlling food portions to deliver food costs and margins
- Adhere to set standards, procedures, department rules and sanitation requirements
- Using kitchen knives and equipment such as grills, ovens, steamers and warmers in food preparation
- Managing kitchen inventory
- Take in deliveries ensuring supplies are fresh and of high quality
- Checking and delivering dishes at correct food temperatures when cooking
- Ensuring all fresh and prepared ingredients are correctly stored
- Keeping the workstations and kitchen equipment are clean, organised and sanitised
- Taking charge of kitchen opening, closing and other side duties as directed by the Head Chef.
