Description

The Opportunity: DRIVING INSTRUCTOR, full-time, based in Timaru.

We deliver driver licence support and driving instruction in Oamaru, Timaru, Ashburton and Christchurch. Due to internal staff changes and career development we are looking to recruit a new Driving Instructor for our Y-Drive Driving School service in South Canterbury.

If you hold a current Full Class 1 Driver Licence and a current Instructor’s (“I”) endorsement, we are keen to hear from you. You must currently be a qualified Class 1 driving instructor to apply for this position.

This is a unique position, with both theory and practical Class 1 driver licence support responsibilities. Ideally it suits a person who is passionate about providing a “hand-up” to those people in our community who present with barriers to success and are likely to need support to gain the necessary theory and/or practical driver licence knowledge and skills to achieve their learner, restricted and/or full driver’s licence.

Get in touch if you…

  • are a qualified Class 1 driving instructor and hold a current full New Zealand driver licence.
  • are a “people person”, with a positive energy, passion, and intrinsic desire to empower and support people to achieve their Class 1 learner, restricted and/or full driver’s licence.
  • are prepared to build strong relationships with both our clients and local stakeholders
  • are confident, resourceful, optimistic, and ready to meet any challenge
  • are highly organised, with strong computer skills
  • have common sense, resiliency, empathy, a sense of humour and ability to use initiative
  • have a commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and apply tikanga in relevant work settings
  • can uphold the core values of the Y: Honesty, Caring, Responsibility and Respect

If you are looking for a full-on, challenging, yet rewarding position supporting people to take charge of their future, we want to hear from you!

Email your CV, a copy of your “I” endorsement and cover letter marked CONFIDENTIAL to Sharyn Kake, Manager Driving & Employment Pathways, sharyn@ymcasc.org.nz. Applications close 5pm, 21 November 2025 A position description may be requested from the same email. Applications will be reviewed as they come in and interviews may commence prior to the close date.
