Description

Senior Dog Handler & Driver — Help Shape Something Special at Waglands

Waglands Dog Daycare is a beautiful, rural property just outside Lower Hutt, known affectionately as “Doggie Mountain.” Set across more than a hectare of native bush, open paddocks, and multiple indoor areas, Waglands offers dogs a truly unique place to play, learn, and rest in balance.

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Dog Handler & Driver to bring their calm confidence, structured handling, and positive attitude to our team. You won’t be managing staff, but you’ll work closely with our Operations Manager to create smooth, enriching days for both dogs and people — helping those around you find their best.

About the Role This is a hands-on, senior-level position designed for someone with strong dog-handling experience and a love for variety. You’ll lead by example, maintain calm group dynamics, and support handlers to develop their own skill and awareness.

Your day will include: – Leading safe, balanced off-leash playgroups of up to 20 dogs – Using structure, clear communication, and positive reinforcement – Spotting early signs of arousal or stress and managing group energy before issues arise – Driving our Waglands vans for pick-ups and drop-offs (short, bus-style routes) – Contributing to enrichment programs, learning stories, and behavioural progress notes – Assisting with daily routines, helping the day flow smoothly for dogs and people alike

What Makes Waglands Different

The environment – A rare mix of large outdoor spaces and multiple heated indoor areas. This gives both dogs and handlers variety, comfort, and space to learn and grow.

The philosophy – Calm, structured, positive handling. We believe in teaching skills, not just supervising play.

The culture – We’re building something special — a place where good handling and teamwork matter more than shortcuts. If you take pride in doing things well, you’ll fit right in.

The rhythm – Four days a week, no weekends. Early or late shifts to suit late risers or those who prefer their afternoons free.

What We’re Looking For

– Proven experience in a senior or lead role within dog daycare, kennels, or dog training – Clean NZ Class 1 driver’s licence and confident driving vans – Strong understanding of canine body language and group management – Calm, kind, and clear communication under pressure – Physically fit for outdoor work on hilly, natural terrain – Structured, dependable, and genuinely care about both dogs and people

What You’ll Gain

– A role where your experience and judgment are valued every day – The chance to help shape how we do things alongside our Operations Manager – A supportive, down-to-earth team that loves what they do – Work-life balance: 4 days a week, no weekends, beautiful natural surroundings

Start Date We’re ready when you are — start now, or join us in the new year.

How to Apply Please email your CV and cover letter to: daycare@waglands.co.nz

Tell us about your handling experience, your approach to calm leadership, and what you value most in a great daycare environment.
