Location: McMurdo Station, Antarctica, Full Time, On Site, Summer season (Estimated October 2026 - Feb 2027)
This is a full on site deployment. You will live and work on the ice for the duration of the assignment.

About the Role As a Maintenance Specialist, you will perform a wide range of preventive and corrective maintenance tasks across buildings, systems, and equipment under the supervision of the Preventative Maintenance Foreman or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Work is assigned based on your experience and operational requirements. This role is essential to keeping McMurdo Station's critical infrastructure running in one of the most unique environments on Earth.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and perform scheduled preventive maintenance on buildings, systems, equipment, and infrastructure
- Conduct major overhauls on HVAC, refrigeration, hydronic systems, pumps, compressors, overhead doors, hoists, kitchen equipment, shop tools, and other facility related assets
- Manage small maintenance projects, coordinating trades, tools, materials, and schedules
- Respond promptly to emergency service calls, including after hours
- Prepare work plans, JHAs/JSAs, checklists, and required documentation
- Maintain accurate records of hours, materials, and work performed
- Communicate job progress and material/labour needs to the Supervisor
- Work from job plans, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, manuals, and codes
- Identify hazards and maintain a safe work environment
- Assist and oversee Utility Technicians as required
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
- 3+ years of industrial or commercial facilities maintenance experience
- Experience in HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and electrical systems
- Experience with fuel oil fired combustion appliances
- Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and diagrams
- Proficiency with mechanical and electrical test equipment
- Experience preparing work plans and safety documentation
- Basic computer literacy and willingness to learn digital tracking systems
- New Zealand citizenship, permanent residency, or valid NZ work rights (no sponsorship available; WHV acceptable with relevant experience)
- Full New Zealand driving licence
- Ability to pass medical, dental, drug testing, and criminal background checks
