ABOUT US

Hunter Filling Systems has been engineering precision filling solutions since 1963. Our specialised machines handle everything from food and dairy products to pharmaceutical and industrial materials — with uncompromising accuracy. We’re known throughout New Zealand and beyond for our innovative, reliable engineering solutions, living by our motto “Filled with Experience.”

We’re a close-knit team of 23 people based in Te Rapa, Hamilton and are very proud of our 63 year heritage. We offer a stable, professional environment where your contribution genuinely matters.

THE ROLE

We’re looking for a hands-on Service Technician to join the team.

This is a hands-on, highly varied role that combines on-site service work with in-house workshop support. You’ll be responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing our filling machines both at customer sites and within our workshop.

You’ll be working on mechanical systems with some pneumatic and PLC components — diagnosing faults, pulling machines apart, replacing parts, and getting things back up and running.

You’ll work closely with our Service and Parts Coordinator and Advanced Manufacturing Manager to ensure customer service and spares requirements are delivered efficiently and to a high standard. The role involves regular travel (domestic and occasional international), problem-solving in real-world environments, and building strong relationships with customers.

If you’re someone who enjoys technical challenges, takes pride in quality workmanship, and values autonomy and responsibility then this could be the role for you.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

Field Service & Customer Support:

  • Travelling to customer sites to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair filling machines
  • Installing, servicing, and commissioning equipment
  • Performing preventative maintenance and identifying wear and potential failures
  • Training customers on basic operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance
  • Providing excellent customer service and ensuring issues are resolved effectively

Workshop & Technical Work:

  • Disassembling and reassembling machines to repair or replace components
  • Supporting factory operations with assembly, fabrication, and machining when required
  • Conducting safety checks and recommending improvements
  • Assisting with continuous improvement of machine performance and reliability

Planning & Reporting:

  • Completing detailed service reports for all work carried out
  • Planning service jobs alongside the Service and Parts Coordinator
  • Ordering and managing parts required for upcoming jobs
  • Maintaining accurate records of time, materials, and job progress
  • Preparing quotations, invoices and job reports for customers

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Trade qualification in mechanical engineering (essential)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience assembling and servicing complex machinery
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and PLC-controlled systems (preferred)
  • Ability to troubleshoot faults and solve complex problems independently
  • Well organised, methodical, and detail-focused
  • Basic IT skills i.e. Microsoft products
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Able to work autonomously and manage your own workload and travel schedule

You’ll also need:

  • Full, clean New Zealand driver’s licence
  • Flexibility to travel and work varied hours when required
  • NZ residency or valid work visa and a passport to enable occasional overseas travel to Australia and Pacific Islands

Advantageous:

  • Electrical trade qualification
  • Experience with food processing or packaging equipment

WHAT WE OFFER

*       Stable, full-time permanent role with a well-established equipment manufacturing company

*       A varied and technically engaging role — no two days are the same

*       Opportunities to travel and work directly with customers

*       Supportive, experienced team environment

*      A company with 60+ years of industry expertise and a strong reputation

APPLICATION PROCESS

To apply, please submit:

*       Your CV outlining relevant work history

*       A brief cover letter telling us a bit about yourself and why this role appeals to you

All interviews will be conducted face-to-face at our Hamilton site — no exceptions.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.

Applications from candidates without the legal right to work in New Zealand will be automatically rejected.
