At Trade Me, it’s important that you can make an offer with confidence. To help with this, we are introducing a background check that will happen when a buyer makes an offer, and a seller accepts it.
How it works

You can enable Make an offer when listing your car for sale

Buyers can look for listings with an asking price and select to ‘Make an offer”

Buyers and sellers can go back and forth until an offer is accepted (up to 7 times)

Upon an offer being accepted, Trade Me checks the PPSR for money owing and verifies with NZ Police if it's stolen.

If either check returns an advisory status, we automatically decline the offer and notify both the buyer and seller.

If there is money owing we advise the buyer to reach out to the seller directly to discuss it further.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing that money is owing on a car, but it’s something the prospective buyer should be aware of, and there should be a plan to clear the sum before the car is purchased.
