A Martinborough couple's ambitious vineyard home, featured on Grand Designs NZ, showcases a striking design with yakishugi charred timber and Ōamaru stone.

The project's budget escalated significantly from $2.5M to nearly $3.3M, forcing the owners to push back their retirement plans to finance the build.

Despite the financial challenges, the couple successfully created their dream home, The Three Chimneys, and believe the incredible result was worth the significant personal and financial sacrifice.

Modern Vineyard House Exterior

The house seems almost needlessly complex in its form, but the build progressed smoothly, apart from a break while they waited to sell off some investment properties. The covered terrace beside the pool will be a welcome respite in the summer.

It’s unexpected, but it works brilliantly - a retro sunken lounge with furniture colours chosen to blend in with the landscape. The sunken lounge is at one end of a long, open-plan living area that opens to the outdoor on both sides.

The second lounge on the top floor is also a treat. Again, it’s minimal in form, with interest provided by the fabric mix. Photo: Frances Oliver

A trompe de l’oeil in the guest bathroom - a fun cellar wallpaper is another unexpected touch. Photo: Frances Oliver

Bathroom And Laundry Details

The home’s smaller spaces combine practicality with personality, from the playful wine cellar wallpaper in the bathroom to the bespoke dog bed built into the laundry.

With the build completed, the couple can now put their attention to the landscaping and newly planted Chardonnay vineyard. Photo: Frances Oliver
