Description
THE OPPORTUNITY
Due to an internal promotion this opportunity as the farm manager at Pāmu’s Duncraigen Farm is available, you’ll have the space, support, and trust to run the farm well, lead a strong team, and make decisions that matter.
Duncraigen Farm is a cornerstone business for Pamu’s Lower South Island supplying Romney rams for 128,000 ewes and Angus bulls for 15,000 cows. You will be the stud master who will deliver on the set breeding direction of these programs.
You’ll be supported by an experienced Business Manager and work alongside a capable team, so you’re not doing this alone. On top of that, you’ll have access to Pāmu’s wider group of experts - including people who support Genetics, HR, finance, communications, sustainability, and health and safety. That means you can focus on leading the farm, knowing you’ve got specialist advice to back you up when you need it. This support lets you concentrate on what’s important - keeping the farm running smoothly day to day, planning, looking after people, and setting the farm up for long-term success.
You’ll have real influence over how the business performs, financially and environmentally, and how the team works together.
This role suits someone who enjoys being hands-on but also likes thinking ahead. You’ll get the chance to use your business skills, grow your leadership style, and see the results of your work overtime. There’s room here to lead in a way that feels true to you – as you develop people, improve systems and lift performance.
If you’re already managing, this role gives you the backing to do your best work. If you’re ready for your next step, it’s an opportunity to grow into a larger, more complex operation with strong support around you. Either way, you’ll be stepping into a role where your leadership, ideas, and care for people and land really count.
ABOUT US
Pāmu Landcorp Farming Limited is a State-Owned Enterprise with over 110 farms across New Zealand. Our purpose is to lead the delivery of innovative and sustainable agriculture solutions for future generations.
THE FARM
Just fifteen minutes from Manapouri, Duncraigen Farm is an 1100 ha (effective) property with the Waiau River and Fiordland National Park on its boundaries.
Duncraigen operates as a stud farm, home to an Angus Stud herd and a Romney stud flock. These provide all bulls and rams to Pāmu properties across the South Island, forming the foundation of the farm's breeding system. Complementing the stud operations is a commercial breeding and finishing enterprise. We have just invested in Halter virtual fencing collars on all the in-calf cows to increase efficiency.
Duncraigen currently follows an all-grass wintering system, with no reliance on cropping; however, could go back to some winter crop in the future, supplements are produced and utilised on-farm to support livestock over the colder months.
ABOUT YOU
You enjoy leading people and running a farm in a way that looks ahead. You communicate clearly, value teamwork, and want to do good work that makes a difference - for your team, the business, and the land.
You’ll bring:
- Experience working in livestock systems, business management and running stud stock programs
- A hands-on leadership style, with a genuine interest in coaching, supporting, and developing people
- Confidence with budgeting, forecasting, and planning, and an interest in improving performance over time
- Strong commercial thinking, with a practical focus on farm profitability and long-term value
- A collaborative approach to leadership - you build trust, give clear direction, and have open, respectful conversations
- A strong commitment to animal welfare, health and safety, and caring for the environment
- The ability to work well with a wide range of people, from on-farm teams through to senior leaders
- Comfort using digital tools and farm systems to understand results, support reporting, and make informed decisions
We’re proud to have a supportive and inclusive culture at Pāmu, and we encourage applications from people who share our values – even if you don’t tick every box.
BENEFITS
You’ll have access to a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your wellbeing and long-term success. This includes health and life insurance, enhanced parental leave benefits, up to 4% KiwiSaver matching, an additional day of leave over Christmas, and ongoing training and development opportunities.
A warm, modern four-bedroom home is provided with a recently renovated kitchen
