McMurdo Station, Antarctica Full-time | 6 - 12 MONTHS
We're recruiting Experienced Heavy Equipment / Machine Operators for a once‑in‑a‑lifetime assignment at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. This is a rare opportunity to work with world‑class equipment in one of the most challenging and rewarding environments imaginable.
About the Role As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you'll support critical station operations by safely operating a wide range of heavy and light machinery across snow, ice, and dirt. You'll be part of a tight‑knit team ensuring the station remains functional, safe, and operational throughout the season.
Key Responsibilities
* Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, including bulldozers, loaders, excavators, graders, backhoes, forklifts, trenchers, snow blasters, tracked tractors, PistenBully, Mattracks, dump trucks, and snow/dirt grooming equipment.
* Perform essential operational tasks: road grading, trenching, ditch cleaning, stockpiling, snow removal, plowing, material handling, disabled vehicle recovery, and airfield/road construction and maintenance.
* Conduct daily equipment and safety inspections, reporting maintenance needs promptly.
* Accurately record equipment hours and time worked.
* Support general station operations in alignment with ASC goals and safety standards.
* Comply with Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements.
* Perform additional duties as required to support station life and operations.
Required Qualifications
* Class 4 licence (Class 5 preferred)
* WTR endorsement + proven machine operating experience
* Minimum 4 years' experience as a heavy equipment operator
* Full NZ Working rights with no restrictions
* Must be willing to get the flu & TDAP Vaccine
* Strong teamwork, communication, and adaptability
* Willingness to be away from home for an extended period
Physical & Deployment Requirements
* Ability and willingness to deploy to Antarctica for several months (6 months minimum)
* Successful completion of medical and dental examinations
* Ability to pass employer drug screening and background checks
* Ability to clear a MINISTRY OF JUSTICE CHECK
* Physically capable of lifting equipment/parts within safety limits
* Comfortable performing demanding physical tasks: climbing, crawling, shovelling, ice‑chipping, and long-distance walking in extreme cold
* Participation in community duties such as station chores, cleanup, recycling, and safety initiatives
