Excavator Operators – Skilled Civil & Infrastructure Projects

We’re seeking experienced Excavator Operators to join a variety of civil, infrastructure and construction projects across Canterbury and Otago. Pay rates $30–$40/hr depending on experience. This role is ideal for operators who are confident running excavators in technically challenging environments and who take pride in precision, safety and efficiency.

Canterbury will be the predominate area of work for this role, however you may also be required to work in the Otago region. This will be discussed further with the successful applicant.

About the role You will operate excavators across civil and infrastructure projects, including drainage, roading, residential developments and commercial sites. Key responsibilities include:

  • Operating excavators for bulk earthworks, precision trenching, final trim and drainage installations
  • Interpreting site plans, specifications, and markers to ensure accurate and efficient excavation
  • Selecting and safely using attachments such as buckets, hammers and blades
  • Conducting pre-start checks, routine maintenance and ensuring equipment is operated safely
  • Assessing ground conditions, planning safe excavation sequences and coordinating with site supervisors
  • Operating in complex or confined sites with precision and adherence to civil construction standards
  • Occasionally assisting with related machinery (loaders, dozers) or light labouring tasks as required
  • Ensuring compliance with site safety protocols and promptly reporting hazards or incidents

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience operating excavators on civil, drainage, roading, or infrastructure projects
  • Skilled in the use of attachments and precision excavation techniques
  • Full NZ Class 1 licence or ability to convert an overseas licence
  • WTR endorsements (or eligibility and willingness to obtain them)
  • Trade qualification or relevant certification advantageous
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and site protocols
  • Reliable transport
  • Two contactable work references
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening
