JDB Contractors Ltd is a growing construction company delivering residential and commercial projects across New Zealand. As the business continues to expand, we are looking for an experienced General Manager to help lead the next stage of growth.
This is a senior leadership role that will play a key part in shaping the future of the business. We need someone who can bring structure, accountability, operational oversight and commercial discipline while helping drive sustainable growth.
This role is ideal for someone with strong construction experience who understands how to lead teams, improve systems, manage risk and build a more scalable business.
About the role
The General Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the business while also helping develop and execute the company’s long-term direction. You will work closely with the team to improve internal systems, strengthen project delivery, manage staff performance and help position the company for continued growth.
You will be expected to take ownership across multiple areas of the business:
-project delivery -construction operations -staff leadership -commercial performance -procurement and subcontractor management -systems and process improvement -client and stakeholder relationships
Key responsibilities:
-Strategic leadership and business growth -Support business growth, market positioning and future expansion -Identify operational improvements and commercial opportunities -Operational oversight -Oversee the day-to-day operations of the business -Improve coordination across projects, site teams, office functions and subcontractors -Ensure projects are planned, resourced and delivered efficiently -Project governance and delivery -Monitor multiple live projects to ensure programme, quality, cost control and performance expectations are being met -Establish and monitor project reporting systems and accountability measures -Support teams to resolve delivery issues before they become larger problems -Financial and commercial management -Help manage budgets, forecasting, cash flow and overall business performance -Monitor project margins, labour efficiency and cost control -Work with the Director, QSs, and admin/accounting support to improve financial visibility and commercial discipline -Team leadership and accountability -Lead and support project managers, supervisors, foremen, office staff and operational personnel -Help build clear reporting lines, performance expectations and accountability -Assist with recruitment, workforce planning and staff development -Systems, structure and process improvement -Build stronger internal systems, reporting frameworks and workflows -Improve consistency across project delivery, communication, procurement and admin processes -Help implement practical systems that make the business more efficient and scalable -Stakeholder and client management -Build strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and consultants -Represent the business professionally in meetings, negotiations and operational discussions -Help maintain confidence in JDB’s delivery capability and reputation -Compliance, contracts and risk -Support compliance with the NZ Building Code, Health and Safety at Work Act and contractual obligations -Help manage project risk, commercial issues and operational exposure -Improve documentation, communication and process discipline across the business
What we’re looking for:
-Proven experience in a senior operations, construction management or general management role -Strong background in construction, contracting or project-based industries -Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage people across multiple levels -Commercially minded with a good understanding of budgets, margins, workflow and profitability -Confident improving systems, structure and accountability -Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills -Able to operate both strategically and practically in a growing business -Experience dealing with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and project teams -A proactive leader who can bring order, drive performance and support growth Preferred -Qualification in Construction Management, Business, Engineering or a related field -Experience across both residential and commercial construction environments -Experience helping grow or restructure a construction business
